Its been a while since I blogged. Have been really busy with work and had hectic travel assignments through the last couple of months. It was exciting, nevertheless. The next version of Flex (code named Gumbo) is announced at http://opensource.adobe.com. Information on Gumbo (the next version of Flex) is now available at http://opensource.adobe.com/wiki/display/flexsdk/Gumbo

Main themes for Gumbo: (from http://opensource.adobe.com)

  • Design in Mind: provide a framework meant for continuous collaboration between designer and developer.
  • Developer Productivity: improve compiler performance and add productivity enhancements to language features like data binding
  • Framework Evolution: take advantage of new Flash Player capabilities and add features required by common use-cases

Happy Flexing!!

I had a great time talking at the Delhi leg of BEA dev2dev summit. The event was extremely well organized and it was great to see a lot of enthusiastic developer folks!. The BEA team presented two very impressive sessions on using the BEA platform to develop SOA based applications and the demos were quite good as well. I had the last slot for talking on Flex integration over weblogic. My presentation was initially supposed to be for 30 minutes. But as I started my presentation, the crowd got so enthusiastic about the flex features, I ended up talking for almost 90 minutes and another 15 minutes of Q and A. I ate in to the lunch time, but the crowd was immensely supportive. The organizers (BEA folks) were extremely gracious – They happily let me continue the presentation despite over shooting the allotted time by a big margin.

Met a lot of folks who were interested to know more about flex and how they could leverage the flash platform to develop the presentation tier of their applications. It was fun, had a great time! I will be talking at the Chennai and Bangalore legs of the BEA dev2dev, and also at the Great Indian Developer Summit. If you are planning to be in any of these events, would love to catch up with you guys!

I will be in Delhi / Noida on 5th and 6th May. I will be talking at the BEA dev2dev techdays about integrating Flex applications on Weblogic server and also creating flex applications using the BEA workshop IDE. I am also planning to meet flex developers in the NCR region and also brainstorm about creating a Flex User Group (FUG) for the NCR. It will be great to catch up if you are a flex developer in the NCR region. I am pretty much available the whole of 5th evening and 6th afternoon, it will be great to catch up with flex / flash /AIR folks in and around Delhi. Give me a call at +919980338894 and we could meet up and have a chat 🙂

I, along with Ramesh will be talking at the Great Indian Developer Summit ’08 from May 19-23 at Bangalore. We will be giving a focused session of Flex, AIR and other platform technologies of Adobe. We are also going to have a demo stall running through the 5 days and also plan to have the team to be present there. If you are going to be there, do drop in to the Adobe stall. I am going to be there all the five days and also hoping to meet many of the RIA developers.

The summit also will feature  Yakov Fain from Farata systems talking about building enterprise applications using Flex and Mike Grushin will be talking about developing flex applications over Microsoft technology stack. Ram and Rupesh from Adobe will be talking about Adobe ColdFusion and Adobe Java technologies in the Java thread of the summit. This is certainly something you don’t want to miss!

Raghu and I will be in Bangalore BarCamp 6 [BCB6] as well (19-20 April ’08) If you want to catch up on any flex / AIR / Adobe platform related stuff, catch hold of me at the venue or drop me a mail at hsivaram [at] adobe [dot] com or call me at +91 9980338894. Will be delighted to meet you. 🙂 See you in BCB6 and (or) GIDS.

Wooah! What a day it was!! The summit totally rocked! It was the culmination of weeks of planning, re-planning efforts and also the result of some incredible execution. Mind you, this was organized by the engineering team and we had no event management support whatsoever. Okay – back to how the event went.

I landed up at the venue around 7 AM (man! thats early!) and I already had butterflies in my stomach as I was to be the MC of the event. I have done it few times before but not for a corporate event like this. Coming from an engineering background and being used to make a living writing code, this was an exciting challenge for me. It was incredible to see the folks had already set up the registration desks. The stage looked fantastic and the scene was set for a great event that followed.

The delegates started walking in at 8:30 around and we had a full house around 9:15. The event started at 9:30 AM and we had Ananth, Director of Flex & cold fusion engineering address the crowd with the welcome note. This was followed by a key note session from Naresh Gupta, MD, India R&D center, Adobe talk about the past present and future of RIAs. Naresh’s presentation covered the entire spectrum of how applications evolved through the years.

Then came David Wadhwani – GM & VP of the platform business unit at Adobe. David spoke about Adobe’s platform strategy and how adobe technologies will revolutionize the RIA world in the years to come, just the way it has been all this while! The AIR demos from David’s session kept the audience captivated and I could literally see jaws dropping when the thermo preview video was played. The session rocked and the loud applause testified it!

Ben Forta (Dir Evangelism) came, spoke and he conquered! Ben dint have a PPT at all!! He built applications (not one, but three) Ben’s presentation was racy, super cool and the crowd just loved it! Ben’s fans in this part of the world got a chance to click a few pictures of his, which he graciously obliged.

James ward did a fantastic session on connecting back ends with Flex applications. I was amazed by the speed at which James wrote those applications. The crowd loved his session and James was patient to answer many many questions that folks asked. I did a lot of socializing with the delegates during the lunch time and also managed to shoot some prospective 30 on air videos as well.

The afternoon sessions started with customer showcases from Ivy Comptech, Borland, Business Objects, Instacoll and Cognizant. It was great to see our customers talk about how our technology helped them build successful businesses. James came back and did the session on RIA best practices. This session had an even longer Q & A and James once again was kind enough to answer them all. The “getting the ACT together” session followed, where we had Mr Neil – professor at KMIT talk about the importance of academia in RIA training. Mrinal spoke about the community activities and Himanshu Modi of techpoint multimedia spoke about training.

The last session for the day was AIRkitectur by Sunil and Raghu which also had a mini skit which kept the crowd entertained. We also had a lot of folks getting their Flex 2.0 books autographed by James and many folks getting their pics clicked along with Ben and James. Meet the Flex team and customer stall showcases followed and it was around 7:30 when the summit closed.

Overall, it was a great day and it was fantastic to have James, Ben and David join us for this event. And not to forget the great audience without which this event could have never been such a great success!

Ramesh & I were at IIIT Bangalore on the 21st for a 4 hour Flex workshop as part of their annual techfest – Innofest. The idea was to address an audience who had little knowledge about web 2.0 world and the growing RIA technologies. Ramesh talked in detail about the RIA paradigms and the Web 2.0 technologies focusing specifically around Adobe Flex, Adobe AIR, Adobe LCDS and Adobe Blaze DS. The audience literally had their jaws dropping when Ramesh demoe’d Ely’s flexbook example and the anthropologie AIR application. Those demos perfectly set the tone for the subsequent session where I built a Flex Quiz application with the attendees. The crowd was damn excited to build their first flex app and I could see the excitement rising when the application was moving towards completion. There were so many questions asked as we coded, and hence, we ran out of time before we could complete the application [:(] We passed on the source code to the attendees so that they could complete it post our session.

This was followed by “Answer a question, win a Flex T-Shirt/Book”. This was quite a lot of fun and folks did answer quite complex questions (Most of them were rooting for the T-Shirt, so the competition was fierce!) On the whole, we had a great afternoon at IIIT-B talking about Flex and Ramesh played the thermo sneak peak video [part1][part2]to a few guys who specifically asked for it. We also got the Innofest T-Shirts, and thats when Pavan, one of the IIITB guy’s walked up to us and said he had designed that T-Shirt and even went on to say without Adobe Photoshop he couldn’t have done any of that. It was a real cool T-Shirt indeed and it was a proud moment for me to hear a passionate Adobe customer’s testimonial on how our tools helped him design something cool!

We did take a few pictures of the event, I havent gotten time to upload them. Most of us have been incredibly busy organizing the Adobe RIA architect summit which is happening on the 3rd of April at The Chancery, Residency Road, Bangalore. If you haven’t still signed up for it, HURRY! the seats are getting sold out in express pace! Register Now!

After almost 3 years working with the Flex Engineering team (and a brief stint with the Adobe Media Player team) I have accepted a  new role as an Evangelist for the platform products of Adobe (Flex , AIR …) It has been  incredible working in the Flex engineering team, and I am going to sorely miss being there! But on the upside, It is going to be exciting times ahead as Flex / AIR is quite hot and happening in India and there is a lot of interest around Adobe technologies. My work will be predominantly India centric and I am looking forward to meeting folks in India working in Flex / AIR.
